Expressing Heartfelt Joy

“Joy arises through heartfelt compromises, in the presence of patience, and the absence of apathy.” These are heartfelt words by local artist and poet Kim Walker. Kim has discovered, throughout her life, the metaphoric lessons of the natural world. Her work honors the energy and insights in Nature by composing a short poem for each of her original paintings.

Beginning her life in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Kim's family moved to Arizona when she was 16. She has always loved the creative process of experimenting with painting techniques and collecting leaves, flowers, and objects from Nature to include in her work. For a long time, the process was a hobby. However, that changed when Kim drove her nine-year-old son, a child prodigy, to a local community college to attend classes. She decided to enroll herself as well to pursue an art degree. Kim completed her BFA in Painting from Arizona State University in 2001. She received her first gallery representation, even before she completed her degree, in 2000.

A turning point came for Kim during her final year of her degree program, with her mother’s passing. For the first time, swallowed in grief, Kim found herself seeking the solitude and nurturing of Nature. During this time, long hikes and periods of reflection helped her realize what many busy and nurturing women ultimately come to terms with: she had never taken the time to be quiet and reflect. Kim described it, "I found myself going alone, for long periods, on hikes as a way to assuage my grief. I always loved Nature; breezes began to feel like arms around me, colors were brighter and full of joy, and the sun warmed my heart, restoring hope and promise to my spirit."  The experience began a commitment to integrating elements of Nature in her paintings to share inspiration with others.

Today, Kim works from her home studio in Phoenix, Arizona, as well as a studio at her family's second home in Baja. The contrast of the desert surroundings with the peaceful ocean beaches continually inspired her; both environments are balancing and energetic. Kim also opened her studio in Phoenix, Arizona, for private tours by appointment. She works with clients on custom compositions utilizing flowers from special events and objects in people's lives. Memorable moments such as weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, and memorials become lifelong keepsakes for families.

"Nature is at the heart of each of my works of art. The beauty, the wonder, the connections, the healing, and comfort become the metaphoric lessons of our lives." Recently, Kim expanded her creative work into sculptural pieces appropriate for indoor and outdoor environments. Their simple elegance and unique form are guaranteed to attract attention and spark lively and memorable conversations.

Kim is a member of the Sonoran Art League, the Arizona Arts Guild, and the Arizona Art Alliance. Her gallery representation is with Wild Holly Gallery in Carefree, Renee Taylor Vue Gallery in Sedona, West Valley Arts HQ in Surprise, Cobalt Fine Arts Gallery in Tubac, Arizona, and Gunnar Nordstrom Gallery in Bellevue, Washington. Kim also participates in juried exhibitions and invitational exhibits throughout the year. The complete listing is on her website. She founded a Facebook page featuring her latest work and posts for events and exhibits. Discover how Kim’s creations can inspire you and preserve your memorable occasions.

Up hold this day

In spite of

And because of

The challenges

The blessings

The mysteries too

Be still and hear

The voice of hope

That speaks and whispers

Inside of you.
